Deflashing Thermoset Parts

Cleaning and deflashing of thermoset moulded parts

Duroplastformteil Entgratung

Various plastic blasting media are used for thermoset deflashing. Emsodur N is ideally suited for cleaning and deflashing thermosets. This blasting media is a polyamide or nylon-based blasting media.

Thermoset deflashing with plastic media – that’s what counts!

Long lifetime

Deflashing media should never be compared with each other by short-term tests. Many blasting media often show a sudden disintegration after hours due to the many small surface tension cracks that suddenly continue through the grains.

Emsodur N (nylon / polyamide blasting media) can round at the corners, but it does not break. As a result, the proportion of nominal grains remains high longer than with other known polyamide blasting media.

Surface appearance and dust-free

Thermoset parts usually get their final surface already during the production process. It is therefore important that they are not damaged, matted or even dusted.

With the nylon blasting media from Emsodur, deflashing processes are possible without any subsequent treatment. The high elasticity guarantees intact surfaces. The low abrasion ensures dust-free results. Expensive reworking is not necessary.

If, on the other hand, matting is desired or higher kinetic energy is required to remove even stubborn flash,  Emsodur GV, which is also a polyamide-6 based blasting media, can be used.

Antistatic treatment

Plastic deflashing media are charged by friction because they are poor electrical conductors. Emsodur absorbs above-average amounts of water, which increases conductivity. Emsodur N also contains an antistatic agent.

Nevertheless, the addition of surface antistatic agent is not entirely unnecessary during the deflashing process, as the flash breakage and the blasting parts also become charged. However, Emsodur can be used to reduce the consumption of antistatic agent and the loss of deflashing media due to “sticky” grains. In addition, particularly dust-free deflashing results are achieved.

Dimensional stability

For a constant and continuous deflashing result, the blasting media must have a high dimensional stability. The tolerance of Emsodur blasting media is +/- 10%, which corresponds to a very high dimensional stability. Due to this high quality we guarantee the customer continuous and reproducible result.

Quality stability

Modern deflashing operations are executed on continuous processing lines. In many instances deflashing machines are integrated directly into the production process.

In order to avoid fluctuations of the deflashing quality, all parameters must be kept constant. This is not possible when using deflashing media produced from waste or recycled raw material of varying chemical compositions or having random granular structure.

Emsodur is only produced from prime raw materials and is continuously checked during the production process for dimensional stability and quality.

More Mass – Higher Kinetic Energy

Many thermosetting plastic mass-produced mouldings have corners, edges, slots and holes, thus limiting the maximum permissible size of the deflashing media particles. Smaller sized deflashing media particles having a cubic form, provide 27% more mass which improves deflashing performance compared to cylindrical shaped deflashing media.

Application, markets, machines

Thermoset moulded parts

Thermoset moulded parts are characterized by their high dimensional stability even at very high temperatures. For this reason, thermoset is used in all applications where high temperatures can occur. Possible areas of application for such thermoset moulded parts are:

During the production of thermoset parts, a flash often occurs on the corners and edges. These flashes can be removed with the help of deflashing or blasting equipment and blasting media.

Shot blasting facilities / Shot blasting machines

Emsodur N can be used in a wide variety of systems. These are among others:

  • Conveyor systems
  • Bulk material facilities
  • Blast wheel (turbine)
  • Free blasting (with/without direct extraction)
  • Injector process
